IELTS Speaking – part 1 (conversation)
In Part 1 of the IELTS Speaking test, the examiner asks you some questions about yourself and everyday subjects such as your family, your country or hometown, your work or studies, your hobbies and interests, your plans for the future, and so on.
Part 1 of the IELTS test takes 4-5 minutes. You need to answer each question by giving as much information as you can without speaking for too long. Your response to each question should be around 30-45 seconds long, so make sure you extend your answers by giving reasons, examples, and so on. If your answers are too short, the examiner may ask you ‘why/why not?’ to encourage you to speak more.
IELTS Speaking – part 2 (presentation)
In Part 2 of the IELTS Speaking test, you have to give a short talk, talking for 1 to 2 minutes. At the start of Part 2, the examiner will give you a topic card and that topic card will tell you the subject you need to talk about. You won’t know the subject before the test, but it will be about you and your personal experience. You have one minute to plan and make notes before you start speaking.
Part 2 of the IELTS test takes 3-4 minutes. This includes the time for the examiner to give you the card and explain the task, your one-minute preparation time and your 1-2 minute talk. The examiner will stop you when the 2 minutes are up, and may ask you one or two questions about your talk.
IELTS Speaking – part 3 (discussion)
In Part 3, the examiner will ask you some questions related to the subject area in Part 2. These questions are different to the questions from Part 1, because they are not about you or your personal experience. They are about things in general that may be outside your personal experience.
Part 3 of the IELTS test takes 4-5 minutes. You need to answer each question and expand your answer by giving extra information, speculating or justifying your opinion. Your answer to each question should be around 30-50 seconds long.
